Thousands of Student-Athletes May Be Impacted — Marko Law Is Taking Action
A disturbing class action lawsuit has been filed against the University of Michigan and former football coach Matt Weiss, alleging the unlawful access and exploitation of private, highly sensitive information belonging to thousands of student-athletes — including intimate photos, medical records, emails, and social media accounts.
This isn’t just about a data breach. It’s about betrayal, gross negligence, and a failure by one of the nation’s most respected universities to protect the very students who trusted them most.
What Happened?
According to the complaint, Matt Weiss, while serving in a position of authority within Michigan’s athletic department, gained unauthorized access to deeply personal data from both current and former student-athletes — particularly female athletes. This data reportedly includes:
- Intimate photos and videos intended only for private partners
- Personal email account content
- Social media messages and activity
- Private health and medical information from athletic records
But this wasn’t limited to a few individuals. Over 150,000 athletes nationwide may have had their data accessed, and more than 3,300 University of Michigan student-athletes could be directly impacted.
The Failure of U of M
Even more shocking is the University of Michigan’s complete breakdown of digital protections. The university allegedly failed to implement proper cybersecurity protocols — allowing Weiss to access this data undetected for an extended period of time.
This lack of oversight left thousands vulnerable and violated the trust placed in U of M’s athletic and educational institutions. To date, the university has yet to provide a full accounting of how this breach occurred — or who might still have access to the stolen data.
The Human Cost
Behind every data point is a person. A daughter. A teammate. A student trying to focus on their goals while now living in fear that their most personal information may be circulating in places like the dark web.
As highlighted in a recent feature on Good Morning America, brave survivors are now stepping forward. One of them, Jane Doe, a former Michigan athlete, publicly shared her story — her anxiety, her outrage, and her commitment to accountability.
